On-demand interviewing at Capital One

You submitted a stellar application for a role at Capital One, and then an email inviting you to an “on-demand interview" appeared in your inbox. If you’re like us, you probably have lots of questions—like what exactly is an “on-demand interview” and how do I prep?

Sound like you? You’re in the right place! Keep reading for advice on how to navigate the process and ace your on-demand interview.

What's an on-demand interview?

Just like a traditional job interview, you’ll respond to a series of questions based on the role you’re applying for. But instead of interviewing with a person live, you’ll record or type your answers for our teams to review later. “On-demand” means you get to decide when and where it happens. Choose a time and place that works best for you.

 Here’s how it works:

  • Once you start the process, you’ll have a set amount of time to answer the questions. Keep in mind—the timer can’t be paused once you start.
  • You’ll be prompted to respond to the questions via audio (talking), typing or in video format, depending on the role. If you need any accommodations, just let us know before you start the interview.
  • You can re-record answers at least once within the set interview time frame. The re-record limit varies based on role.
  • The invitation to complete your on-demand interview will expire after a set amount of time. You can find the time frame for your specific role in your email invite.

Optimize your interview

Our next tip? Find the right equipment and surroundings. To make sure you’re ready and avoid any potential glitches during the interview:

  • Use Google Chrome as your browser to access the interview.
  • Unmute your speakers or use headphones.
  • Practice responding to questions on the test page of the interview platform. (Your recruiter won’t be able to review any practice recordings.)
  • Find a quiet, distraction-free environment with a neutral background (if you’re recording yourself to answer any questions).
  • Remember to silence phone and computer notifications so you won’t be interrupted.

Wow your interviewers using the SAR method

Interview questions vary by role, but the most common type of question is situational. For example, you’re asked to describe a time you accomplished a major goal. To help answer, we recommend organizing your answer using the SAR method:

  • Situation: Provide specific details about the issue you were facing.
  • Action:Explain the steps you took to address the situation.
  • Results: Share the specific outcomes of your actions.

Let’s put that into practice. Think of a scenario where you could apply the SAR method. First, you’d set up the situation by describing a problem or goal you wanted to achieve. Then, you’d briefly explain the actions you took to solve the problem—what was the process like? Did you encounter any roadblocks? Finally, you’d explain how your actions led to success. Be sure to celebrate all your wins in the scenario.

Our last tip? Remember to bring the same energy as you would for an in-person interview. It's still important to prepare and engage as if you were talking to someone else, even though you won’t have a conversation with another person.
