What to expect during your Capital One interview

Your application is complete, and a recruiter has been in touch to discuss your qualifications—the interview phase has officially kicked off!

From recruiter calls to Power Days, a series of interviews about you and the skills and insights you bring to your work, you’ll complete a series of steps on your journey to joining Capital One. And, you’ll be able to complete your interviews from the comfort of your home! Given the success of our virtual interviewing model, and the flexibility it allows for both interviewers and candidates, we continue to utilize virtual interviewing as we settle into our hybrid model of working.

Capital One requires that candidates use video for all virtual interviews. Please be prepared to remain on video for the duration of your interview(s). If there are any extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from doing so, flag this to your recruiter or interview scheduling coordinator as soon as possible.

While the interviews vary depending on the position, we’re here to help you prepare and confidently approach your conversations. That’s why we’re giving an inside look into our general process, which usually includes several key milestones.

Take a look below at the types of interviews you can expect during your interview process!

Initial conversations and tasks

Once you apply, you may be asked to complete an automated assessment that evaluates job-related skills like communication, customer focus, leadership and problem solving. If you pass the assessment, a recruiter will review your experience and connect with you about the next steps.

Recruiter Screen: A Capital One recruiter will have an initial phone conversation with you about the position, your resume and the enterprise.

Virtual Test: Depending on the position, you may have to take an hour-long virtual exam that tests your knowledge of the position.

Hiring Manager Pre-Screen: After you pass the recruiter screen and virtual testing, a recruiter will set up a 30-minute phone interview with the hiring manager. The hiring manager will discuss the position and your background to see if you are fit for the role and Capital One.

Data Science Challenge: If you’re a candidate applying for a data science role, you will have to take a Data Science Challenge. The challenge is a take-home assignment you will complete before the Power Day. The challenge will focus on data and engineering analytics, written communication and predictive modeling.

Power Day interviews

Once you successfully complete the initial application steps, your recruiter will invite you to a series of interviews as part of the Power Day. Depending on the position, the interviews may include:

Job Fit Interview: All candidates will complete one or two job fit interviews during the Power Day. Job fit interviews assess your aptitude for the role, team and Capital One culture.

Behavioral Interview: Behavioral interview questions evaluate how you handled a particular experience. These questions typically follow the format of, “Tell me about a time when…” Behavioral interviewers assess competencies such as problem solving, influence or results focus. Behavioral interviews are used for most positions.

Case Interview: A case interactive is an interview where you must solve a real-life business problem. The interviewer will gauge your strategic thinking, analytical and quantitative skills.

Mini-case interviews are conducted in about 30 minutes. Campus, business analyst, product manager and finance positions typically require a case or mini-case interview.
