What work-life balance looks like at Capital One
When Chase joined Capital One in 2020, he was excited about new growth opportunities and ways to apply his cyber security expertise. With the support of his manager, he sharpened his skills by taking classes through our internal learning platforms, earning certifications and participating in team hackathons.
Now, as a senior manager on the Mergers & Acquisitions Information Security Office team, Chase credits Capital One’s supportive environment as a major reason he was able to take charge of his career and grow into a new role, all while still having the flexibility to prioritize his life outside of work.
“Here at Capital One, we put people first,” Chase said. “The personal flexibility offered here is all about empowering you to thrive.”
Flexibility that works for you
Merideth, a senior manager on the Endpoint Asset Management and Support team, is able to show up as a leader in many ways. The wide range of opportunities offered at Capital One means she can pursue her passion for community through her work as a chapter leader for Salute, Capital One’s Business Resource Group (BRG) for active military, veterans, spouses and allies. As a chapter lead, she’s able to volunteer for recruitment and community events, and she helped organize Capital One’s first-ever Military Ball.
“At Capital One, we’re empowered to grow our careers and to grow as people as well,” Merideth said.
Merideth feels grounded professionally and personally by the support she receives from her team. When her daughter spiked a fever before a critical meeting, Merideth’s team rescheduled the meeting and rallied behind her with messages of reassurance. It’s one of many experiences that have enabled her and other associates to feel they're able to prioritize what matters most in the moment.
Investing in yourself, every day
Chase’s passion for tech has led him to much more than just career growth. He’s found community through internal tech events, such as hackathons and conferences. Similar to Merideth, he’s reached out to BRGs and internal support groups to follow his passions and learn new skills.
Backed by a culture that encourages associates to discover and pursue their own unique paths of career growth, Chase believes a key reason so many associates experience success is because of the people and leaders who invest in each other.
“Career growth is important, but it isn’t something you have to figure out alone here at Capital One,” Chase said. “Since joining Capital One, I’ve found work that I’m passionate about, leaders that are invested in my growth and a place that rewards my drive to succeed, all while making friends along the way.”
Finding space to learn and grow
Abdiel first joined Capital One as an intern with the Management Internship Program. He was able to jump in on major projects within the Technology Audit team, where he learned about the processes involved in maintaining and expanding Capital One’s technological advancements.
Now as an associate in our Management Rotation Program, he’s continuing on a path of flexible career development and discovery, quickly rising to new and expanded roles and opportunities. In his first rotation with the Card Audit team, Abdiel helped perform an audit that involved learning about Capital One’s direct mail campaigns and how we communicate with our customers, and also contributed to international projects focused on Capital One’s businesses and customers in the UK and Canada.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to begin my career at Capital One because I’m able to dive into complex work and solve real-life problems while also having balance in my personal life, which is very important to me,” Abdiel said.
Like his fellow associates Merideth and Chase, Abdiel has had complete support from his team leaders and managers to explore his professional passions, all while having the personal flexibility to enjoy his passions outside of work—fishing and traveling.
Fueling growth through career support
Personal flexibility is more than just professional support. It’s the ability to take ownership of your own career.
“Before I started my internship, I wasn’t as confident in myself or my career,” Abdiel said. “Thanks to my managers, team and the culture at Capital One, I’ve been able to grow in ways I didn’t ever think possible.”
Though Abdiel, Merideth and Chase navigate different roles and different lives, they all appreciate Capital One’s culture of support, and the personal flexibility to explore new opportunities and goals within their career journeys.
