A day in the life at Capital One

At Capital One, no two days are alike. Technologists may solve complex machine learning problems and research innovative solutions, while customer care and Café associates may be building relationships with customers and community. Across the company, associates can take advantage of career development resources and find community with Business Resource Groups (BRGs). The results? Groundbreaking financial solutions to help customers achieve their goals.

Here’s what a day working at Capital One could look like.

Work with innovative technology

We’re all in on artificial intelligence, machine learning, the cloud and data analytics. Associates and leaders take on meaningful projects that push the boundaries of what banking can be. Abhijit Bose, Senior Vice President and head of the Center for Machine Learning, shares how Capital One uses machine learning to improve customers’ experiences. This customer-focused approach drives the software engineering team behind Capital One’s mobile app

Innovation isn’t just limited to technologists. Associates across all levels and job functions can convert concepts and innovations into patent applications with the OnePatents program, encouraging everyone to become an inventor at Capital One.

Help customers

Associates assist our customers in different ways, from navigating products over the phone, to meeting customers in-person in Capital One Cafés, to working behind the scenes to create new banking initiatives and products.

In 2022, Capital One eliminated overdraft and non-sufficient fund fees for customers, making banking more accessible and furthering Capital One’s commitment to doing the right thing. This project collaborated with the Money & Life Program, where associates work with customers to help them reach their financial goals through one-on-one coaching. Associates in enterprise support roles, such as finance, legal and communications, are crucial to supporting Capital One customers through behind the scenes support and launching products that drive customer engagement.

Invest in your career development

Capital One gives our associates space to grow and take charge of their careers. Capital One’s free career development resources provide private career consultation, workshops and a digital toolkit to help associates identify career paths and achieve their goals. Customer-facing associates can take advantage of our Customer-Facing Associate Mobility program, a full-time, six-month experience that introduces associates to professional opportunities outside of their current customer care roles.

Associates at Capital One have many options to upskill and continue a path of lifelong learning. For associates with an interest in tech, we developed in-house training resources that help our associates learn and adopt new applicable skills. Our tuition assistance benefit—which provides a maximum of $5,250 in tuition costs up front—supports the development of associates across all education and professional backgrounds.

Give back

Work at Capital One includes building thriving communities in and outside of the company. This starts with our Business Resource Groups (BRG), which are voluntary, associate-led groups that provide space for community connections, cultural celebration, community service and professional development. Associates can volunteer their time and expertise with the Capital One Pro Bono program, which supports nonprofits and small businesses. Café ambassadors drive change through building a welcoming community space and volunteering. From teaching students to code to leading American Sign Language workshops, Capital One associates are committed to making a positive impact in their communities.

Advocate for others

Teamwork is at the heart of what we do. While leaders play a big part in developing our strategy, they also share their experiences, provide mentoring and create space for associates to grow and thrive. Events like hackathons, supported by Capital One’s BRGs, allow associates to work together to innovate new solutions. Alisha, a Capital One Café ambassador, relies on her network to make an impact in the larger community. Associates find belonging with their coworkers, relying on them to build their network and drive solutions.
