Risk Manager, Card Controls Program Operations

Capital One’s Card Risk organization is responsible for core areas that span Risk Management, Strategy, Operations, Technology, and Analytics.  This organization leads, advises and innovates on some of the top transformational initiatives across the Card business.  Specifically, the Process Excellence Team within Card Risk is leading a multi-year transformational Well Managed journey focusing on Strengthening US Card’s control ecosystem, enabling ownership & accountability through transparency, amplifying simplification & automation, and driving sustainability.

The Card Risk Process Excellence Team is currently hiring for a Manager that will take our Well Managed transformation to the next level by leading a portion of the Card Control Testing program, furthering the top-notch brand that Card Risk has built.  This Manager will be responsible for the ongoing day to day operations of our testing operations/engagements.  As a key member of the Well Managed Program, this role will collaborate with smart and passionate leaders to deliver results that have a direct impact on the company’s bottom line. 

Core capabilities for this foundational role include a strong strategic and tactical mindset with significant risk management and testing expertise, coupled with a balanced approach to driving effectiveness and efficiency to enhance both business and risk management processes and programs.  This role requires the ability to lead people both directly and indirectly to deliver high-quality value, to exhibit great judgment in solving challenging problems, and to leverage deep subject matter expertise to enable our processes to shine in our control ecosystem.  This role requires a well-rounded and seasoned individual who is comfortable adjusting their approach to meet unique needs across multiple stakeholder groups within a complex organization. 

Successful candidates will demonstrate a proven track record of control knowledge, project and program delivery, change resiliency to maintain momentum in a dynamic, fast-paced and complex environment and among competing priorities, and have strong partnership and communication skills to engage and influence critical stakeholders.  This role is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, who can support transformational change and deliver game-changing value.  The preferred candidate will have experience working in Compliance and/or Risk Management organizations, with a solid understanding of process management frameworks and risk and control methodology for all types of controls. 


Responsibilities:

  • Owns the engagement model with KPMG third party testing, including status tracking, weekly meetings, QA and entry of test results, collaboration on impediments and business reporting

  • Owns governance of the annual testing calendar, including tools/techniques and validation efforts to ensure we maintain testing timeliness goals

  • Owns engagement model with second line challenge teams, including IRMs (monthly assessments) and ERM (annual Division Program Reviews, quarterly reviews and Control Standard updates) to ensure test team is aware of results and maintains test sufficiency goals

  • Leverages tools to support management of team initiatives 

  • Engaging in Card and Divisional activities as warranted to drive career growth and development

  • Building relationships and collaborating with key stakeholders, driving cross-functional opportunities to grow brand, processes and an enhanced risk management environment

Basic Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification

  • At least 4 years of Compliance, Legal, Audit,  or first or second line Risk Management experience 

  • At least 3 years of Project or Process Management experience

  • At least 3 years of experience supporting, partnering and interacting with internal business clients

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience

  • 5+ years of Project Management experience leading cross functional projects and programs in Risk

  • 5+ years of Compliance, Legal, Audit, or first or second line Risk Management experience

  • 4+ years of Project or Process Management experience

  • 3+ years of experience in reporting and analyzing data

  • Certified Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM)

  • PMP, Lean, Agile or Six Sigma certification

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $146,100 - $166,700 for Risk Manager


Richmond, VA: $132,800 - $151,600 for Risk Manager










Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
