The Role:
The Chief Counsel leading the “techreg Legal” (trL) team is seeking a Chief of Staff (COS) to provide strategic, operational, and legal advice and drive results across the range of business and risk activities supported by the team, to assist the Chief Counsel and the trL Leadership Team in managing the organization’s management routines, and to optimize the associate experience for the entire team of 50 associates. Candidates should be highly organized and autonomous, pragmatic, and composed. They should have a passion for creating and enhancing a positive culture of collaboration. Candidates should also have engaging executive presence, strong communication skills, be able to build relationships with a variety of personalities, and have an inclination to elevate others.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning, Prioritization, and Problem-Solving
Serve as a strategic thought partner and trusted advisor to senior team leadership on critical strategic, operational and legal issues.
Engage as extension of the executive with the organization’s key partners
Proactively identify high-profile projects that add value and where needed lead them to successful delivery.
Manage processes for defining and communicating strategic vision, goals, and annual planning.
Drive innovation in process and execution across the portfolio.
Manage agendas and facilitation of leadership team management routines
Developing relationships within direct and extended teams to serve as an informed and helpful sounding board and thought partner.
Support and work with partners, as needed (Legal Management Group, HR, Communications, Workplace Solutions, etc.)
Support and build a world-class team by attracting, interviewing, and onboarding future team members, and coaching/mentoring associates.
Engagement and Connectedness
Drive engagement and inclusion within the team.
Lead Voice of Associate efforts and initiatives to improve associate experience
Develop and execute a community engagement strategy
Serve as “go to” person for other trL associates
Be a safe space for team’s associates to express concerns and ideas for cultural improvements
Operational Excellence
Support strategic planning and operational management of budget and workforce in partnership with Finance and HR.
Lead and manage diverse operational functions (staffing, budgeting, high-level meetings/events, team intranet, onboarding, etc).
Identify opportunities for process improvements
Manage financial aspects of and related budget for the trL budget
Communications
Develop and execute communication strategies and work as appropriate with communications teams to plan and execute key messages for internal and external audiences.
Creating executive-ready presentations and materials.
Developing and delivering executive and board-level reviews and strategic updates.
People Leadership
Manage and develop a small team of Administrative associates (currently 6 FTEs)

Basic Qualifications:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, or as in-house counsel
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong project management and organizational skills. Meticulous attention to detail
Strong business judgment, influencing skills, leadership and integrity
Experience in handling highly sensitive and confidential issues

This role is hybrid meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting. Fridays are enterprise- wide virtual work days. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are options for in-person days for associates to spend time together working in our beautifully-designed team areas.
The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $193,000 - $220,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. CounselCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
