An opportunity exists for an experienced attorney to join Capital One’s Consumer and Small Business Legal team. The attorney in this role will be a key advisor to Capital One servicing, a core and critical function that is rapidly evolving and incorporating technology to enhance customer and associate experiences and outcomes. You’ll partner with the business to learn about and understand the business intent, including relating to generative AI, investigate and assess the legal and business risks, and ultimately help the team mitigate risk and reach their business goals. You’ll also review contracts and other servicing materials to anticipate risk and protect the business, and you’ll work in coordination with compliance, risk, legal, and the business to support the development of a cutting-edge program that is fully compliant with the evolving and dynamic state and federal regulatory environment.
In this role you'll have the opportunity to learn and partner with the bright, collaborative and dynamic group of attorneys who support the Capital One card business, as well as build working relationships across the Legal department. To succeed in this role, you’ll need strong legal analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail and nuance. Written and oral communication skills are key, as is the ability to organize and convey thoughts succinctly and flexibly adapt to new technologies.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One credit card products and related business operations, including as they relate to contracts, servicing materials, and new technologies and innovative processes;
“Translating” the laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;
Ensuring that support is provided in a timely manner in order to meet regulatory and business requirements;
Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team;
Partnering internally with other business counsel and legal subject matter experts to drive consistency and best practices; and
Partnering closely with other Compliance and Risk advisors to drive comprehensive and consistent support
Basic Qualifications:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
At least 3 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate or as in-house counsel
Preferred Qualifications:
4+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department or government agency doing work related to the financial service industry
Proficiency with consumer financial regulatory laws
Familiarity with and interest in emerging technologies in consumer financial services and the ability to assess associated legal risks
Experience reviewing, drafting, and interpreting complex commercial agreements with the ability to identify and mitigate legal and operational risk
Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, and clearly communicate complex legal principles to colleagues that range from frontline agents to business leaders
Ability and desire to learn new areas of law
Ability and willingness to work as a team player
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong analytical and organizational skills

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
Chicago, IL: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, CounselCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
