Elevating our community with Hispanics in Tech
Alejandra, a risk manager, is a boomerang to Capital One, having returned to the company in 2023. One of the things that brought her back to the company was Hispanics in Tech (HIT), Capital One’s Business Resource Group (BRG) for Hispanic technologists and allies.
“When I first worked at Capital One, I gravitated towards the HIT community because there were a lot of mentorship opportunities. I realized how valuable and meaningful it was. So when I came back, I took on a leadership role as a mentor,” Alejandra said.
Alejandra works with HIT leadership to offer mentorship and career development opportunities and build community.
Personal and professional growth
HIT provides opportunities for associates to deepen their network and learn new skills.
One of the biggest events is the HIT Conference, a two-day event where associates can hear from leaders, attend skill development workshops and make connections across the community.
Jorge, a software engineer, used knowledge from a HIT Conference speaker to better understand the review process and ask for feedback.
“Being an engineer, you always want to hear about technical subjects. But my favorite speaker gave a presentation on how to approach review cycles and talk about yourself,” Jorge explained. “It’s really useful to have someone demystifying the process, and I’ve gotten better reviews as a result.”
Events like the HIT Conference, plus smaller and local events led by HIT’s local chapters, provide opportunities for the community to catch up, meet new people and celebrate their accomplishments.
“When I went to an event after returning to Capital One and saw everyone in a room together, it was like I never left,” Alejandra said. “We picked up right where we left off.”
A welcoming community
The HIT community is committed to building a welcoming space to celebrate their culture and support other members on their career journey.
For Jorge, uplifting Latino culture has increased his sense of belonging at Capital One–and he encourages anyone curious about the BRG to join in.
“When I first joined HIT, I felt like I had a place and like I belonged,” Jorge said. “I want people to come and experience our culture, our warmth, to try food and learn something new.”
The tight-knit community also supports each other in searching for new careers, learning new skills and nurturing talent in tech.
Eduardo, a project manager and HIT’s chief of staff, is especially proud of the new job opportunities created.
“That’s what we’re here for, to elevate talent. We’re continuing to inspire and create opportunities for connection,” Eduardo said.
Building a future of Hispanics in tech
HIT events are open to anyone–whether they’re an expert in tech or totally new. The BRG was invaluable in Alejandra’s transition from a lawyer to a more technical role.
“I didn’t really have access or understand what the entire universe of that tech space looked like,” Alejandra explained. “Through my relationships and connections I’ve made in HIT, I was able to learn more about tech and pursue a new career path.”
The supportive community, development opportunities and vibrant events make HIT an essential part of Capital One’s mission to change banking for good.
“Even on my toughest days, I have HIT and the community,” Eduardo said. “That keeps me going. That's why I want to continue working at Capital One.”
