Life on our team
Karan
Senior Associate, Strategy Consulting

The Strategy Consulting experience
Each year, you’ll rotate through 3-4 project cycles across business functions. That could mean innovating our credit card and banking businesses, strategizing expansion across our new software-as-a-service business, exploring how we can unlock the power of artificial intelligence or defining a winning customer experience strategy, just to name a few.
A day in the life of a Strategy Consulting associate
You will work on a wide variety of projects on our team, and no two days will be exactly the same. However, you'll have ample opportunities each day to problem solve with your team and senior leaders as you tackle the industry’s most pressing challenges. You’ll also have dedicated time for career development and networking.
With our hybrid policy, we work together in office Tuesday through Thursday. We have flexibility to work remotely on Monday and Friday. Preview a day on our Strategy Consulting team.

Commute to the office
You take the D.C. Metro to Capital One’s McLean headquarters. Bonus—the Metro has a direct line to our office.
Down time
It’s Bagel Thursday! Head up to the Strategy Consulting floor for coffee and a bagel. On the way, you bump into your last project VP and catch up on your lives outside of work.
Marketing strategy team stand-up
You start the morning with a team sync to align on priorities. The team starts the meeting with a fun “question of the day” and then plans for the day ahead.
1:1 with development manager
You meet with your development manager to discuss career goals and professional development. Today, you discuss strategies to prepare for an upcoming business partner presentation.
Marketing strategy problem solving session
The team meets to discuss emerging marketing channels where Capital One could invest. You’ve been driving the analysis, so you lead the discussion, sharing your findings with the team and determining where to engage your business partners for problem solving.
Women in Strategy: leadership lessons from our female executives
Women in Strategy offers opportunities for associates to network with and learn from women across the company. Today, the President of Retail Bank joins to share lessons from her 20+ year career at Capital One.
Work block
You spend time incorporating the team’s feedback on the analysis from the earlier problem solving session. Then, you start building slides based on your analysis to communicate your recommendations to business partners.
Leadership group meeting: onboarding committee
You’re a member of Strategy Consulting’s Onboarding Committee, one of many leadership groups where associates get involved. Today, you’re finalizing the schedule and activities for a new associate cohort, who will start in a few weeks.
Business partner meeting
You end the day with a team meeting with Capital One’s Chief Product Officer, presenting a proposed marketing strategy. Feedback from the meeting will help the team prepare for next week’s meeting with Capital One’s CEO, Rich Fairbank.
Team dinner
Your team’s VP hosts a dinner to celebrate the beginning of the project. You enjoy the evening connecting with your project team outside the office.

“I built a strong set of business fundamentals during my time on the team which prepared me to engage with and contribute to the Stanford community. The most important lesson I learned, however, was the value of working with wonderful people. My friends and mentors from the group will be an important part of my life for many years down the road.”

“The best thing about Strategy Consulting is that we put associates in positions that stretch them beyond their comfort zone, and we consistently see them thrive in those situations. I would not be the leader I am today if I hadn't been put in these challenging situations and provided continuous mentoring, coaching and trust by leaders on our team.”

Leah

“I enjoy supporting associates in their journey to define their career path and leadership style. Associates come in with such brilliant ideas and passion that we could all stand to learn from. I want to be a partner in helping them find their voice, both in confidence and stylistically, so that they can show up authentically and effectively.”

“Strategy Consulting associates are some of the future executives of Capital One. As an associate, you can define your own career path; some people stay in the group for multiple years, while others take on leadership roles across the enterprise. The group is full of incredibly talented associates, and we set them up to be successful in whatever role they choose to pursue.”

Derek

“When I first joined the Strategy Consulting team, I never would have guessed that only a few years later, I’d have the opportunity to lead product strategy for millions of Capital One’s checking customers. My managers and mentors on the team instilled in me the confidence to lead the strategic direction of some of Capital One’s most important products.”

Rohan
