This is a Hybrid position located in Plano, TX. Relocation to Plano, TX is required if you're not located in the Dallas, TX area.

At a Glance

The Manager Front End Designer, Design Systems sets the tone and strategy of our FS Design System from a development perspective. This person will Lead as a individual contributor.

Role Focus

The Design System Front End Designer Lead is responsible for setting the tone and strategy of the FS Design System from a development perspective. They’ll work alongside the Design System Visual Design Lead, who is responsible for a similar effort from a visual design perspective. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Serving as part of the Design Architecture Leadership Team, advocating and representing the collective perspective of Design Architecture’s developers

  • Leading the technical design and implementation of the FS Design System including typography, color, iconography and componentry, and the tools, resources and documentations to support the system

  • Supporting the Head of Design Architecture with the Strategic Direction and Impact of FS Design System (developer focus)

  • Learning about FS Design System needs, development and adoption as the primary partner to our Tech Leads

  • Supporting influence of the Enterprise Design System/Gravity, and driving from a development perspective

  • Ensuring the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs

  • Creating and maintaining automated tests to ensure quality while saving time and money

  • Setting technical standards and best practices for the Design Architecture team

  • Collaborating with other team members and stakeholders

  • Supporting our Design System customers where they’re at, through working with them to understand issues and challenges and working with the Design Architecture team to resolve those issues and challenges in an expedient manner

  • Reporting team and system progress regularly, with a focus on development

  • Managing the workload and priorities of additional developers under the direction and support of the Head of FS.xd Design Architecture

  • Providing growth and people leadership for Design System Front End Developers within FS Design Architecture

  • Providing additional lift for developer support within team (helping spread existing responsibilities that are shared today)

What You’ll Bring

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with design systems and a desire to challenge the status quo and innovate

  • Deep expertise in design thinking

  • Experience delivering high-quality specifications and documentation for system additions and enhancements

  • A cross-disciplinary mindset and an ability to work directly with a design team to facilitate the building of components, patterns and templates 

  • A passion for creating design solutions that are inclusive and accessible to provide a great experience for all users

  • An educational mindset and desire to support system adopters through onboarding sessions, 1:1 troubleshooting, and ongoing training support

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Front-End Technologies & Architecture
    • 4+ years of experience with front-end technologies (TypeScript, Web APIs, Node.js, Deno, WebAssembly)
    • 4+ years of experience with UI application architecture and design patterns
    • 4+ years of experience with build tools (webpack, Vite, esbuild, Rollup)
    • 4+ years of experience with architecture patterns, including microservices, layered, and event-driven architecture

  • UI/UX & Responsive Design
    • 6+ years of designing digital products and experiences
    • 4+ years of experience in responsive, adaptive, and intrinsic design capabilities
    • 4+ years of experience with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for components and responsive layouts
    • 4+ years of experience translating complex business requirements into manageable building blocks

  • HTML, Accessibility & Compliance
    • 4+ years of experience with semantic and accessible HTML
    • 2+ years working with W3C standards to enable accessibility best practices for the web and applications
    • 2+ years of experience building digital products where compliance with accessibility standards is part of the “definition of done”
    • 2+ years of experience with semantic and accessible HTML to meet accessibility requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA, ADA, Section 508)

  • Frameworks & APIs
    • 2+ years of experience working on a design system
    • 2+ years of experience with web frameworks (React, Angular, Vue.js, Lit)
    • 2+ years of experience with HTTP-based APIs (REST, RPC, GraphQL, microservices)
    • 2+ years of experience with a cloud computing provider (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)

  • Leadership & Agile Methodologies
    • 2+ years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing strategic projects
    • 2+ years of experience in a people management position
    • Experience in Agile or Kanban software development methodologies

  • Performance Optimization & Mobile Development
    • 1+ year of experience improving load time performance through bundle size analysis or resource optimization
    • Experience in native mobile development frameworks and environments (e.g., Swift)

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Plano, TX: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, Design











Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
